The mission of Focus On The Children is to prevent and address childhood trauma.
Our Board of Directors has recently extended our mission to include addressing trauma in Pre-K children through 12th grade students that resulted from the COVID-19 crisis.
Past Focus On the Children projects include:
Providing high-quality, low-ratio childcare to infants and toddlers of families living in homeless circumstances.
Acting as a pass-through non-profit organization to support alternative treatment for children who have been traumatized by Traumatic Brain Injury.
Providing parents no-cost access to support tools for their children living on the autism spectrum.
●Because school districts across the country are experiencing state budget cuts for the 2020/2021 school year. So often, professional development funding for teaching staff is limited. Federal COVID-19 support for schools will provide PPE and other health and safety upgrades, NOT tools to support the social emotional wellness of our teachers and students.
●Because teachers themselves most often can ill-afford to pay out-of-pocket for the crucial support they need. Even before the COVID-19 crisis, educators across the country struggled with student engagement and regularly sought tools to support their student’s social emotional wellness while delivering academic standards.
●Because up to 80% of students have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Studies we find credible about the impact of trauma can be found here:

A Better Day Curriculum: COVID-19 RESPONSE
A gift to The Focus On The Children: A Better Day Curriculum Project can provide significant relief of the stressors for both teachers and students that have resulted during the COVID-19 crisis. And as we know, once anxiety is reduced in the educational setting, true learning can happen.
“Applying these tools in the classroom, A Better Day Curriculum has guided us to create daily miracles. Everything really can be different. Believe it!”
-Holly Wu, Chinook Academy Founder/Educator, Albuquerque, NM
“As a teacher of music for nearly thirty years, A Better Day tools have given me an insight into the nature of teaching itself.”
-Caroline Coleman, Educator, Cornwall, England
” Reaching a student/client no matter the age/grade, on a new level with A Better Day tools, has provided me with a way to connect. I have such gratitude for seeing my perceived unreachable kids blossom.”
-Heather Abella, Albuquerque, New Mexico
If we can teach our students this, all other significant learning will follow. A Better Day Curriculum gives teachers the tools to daily convey this crucial message to their students:
"Never forget that you are one of a kind. Never forget that if there weren't any need for you in all your uniqueness to be on this earth, you wouldn't be here in the first place. And never forget, no matter how overwhelming life's challenges and problems seem to be, that one person can make a difference in the world. In fact, it is always because of one person that all the changes that matter in the world come about. You can be that one person."
R. Buckminster Fuller
